The stormtrooper helmet is like many helmets. It's hard, serves to protect the head from damage, and it can smell funny if you don't clean the inside after wearing it for long periods of time. Why, back in the olden days, they had a day set aside just for the washing of helmets!
Speaking strictly of the present day, of course, you'll find that helmets still look awesome. After all, what is a suit of white armor without the helmet to match? The helmets make the soldier, if ya ask me. I'm sure they do other cool stuff too, but you'll have to ask someone certified in the makings of such things, or buy your own and poke around in it to see what cool features it holds.
